Summary. A recent update to Symantec Endpoint Protection antivirus software for Apple (Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 for Mac), may result in repeatedly displaying the LiveUpdate window.
This may happen upon startup, or when waking from sleep, or when logging in. According to some reports, the LiveUpdate window might re-appear immediately after closing or it won’t close at all.
Solution. The following steps can help resolve this problem.
- You need to have an administrative account on your computer to begin. If you are working on your own personal computer, then your user account is probably setup as an administrator. Continue to step #3 after reading step #2.
- If you are on a computer owned by a university, business, or other institution, it’s likely you won’t have the rights to proceed with these steps. If that is the case, contact a system administrator and don’t attempt to do the following.
- Open the Terminal app, located in the Utilities folder.
- At the prompt (it looks like a box), type the following and press the Enter key:
sudo symsched -l
Where -l is a lower case L. You can also copy and paste this command into the Terminal window. If prompted for a password, please type your account password for the computer. Your account must have admin rights. This command should list and display any symantec scheduled items. - At the prompt, type the following and press the Enter key:
sudo symsched -d all
This will delete the current live update scheduled task(s). - At the prompt, type the following and press the Enter key:
sudo symsched LiveUpdate “Update All Daily” 1 0 -daily 09:00 “All Products” -quiet
This creates a new scheduled task to run LiveUpdate daily without bringing up the intrusive LiveUpdate window. Note that the above must be typed manually, otherwise the smart quotes will be rejected by Terminal. Or, you can copy and paste the command into a text editor, and then replace the smart quotes with regular quotes.
Conclusion. The above steps should resolve this problem. Thanks to the University of Iowa ITS for providing assistance with resolving this issue. [source]
