COVID-19 Recent News as of 12 Mar 2020

UPDATE: This post offers news through 12 March 2020. For news after that time, please refer to our COVID-19 Strategic Response Portal.

Summary

This page offers recent news about COVID-19, an airborne virus of the same coronavirus family as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome). [Source: CDC] The CDC initially referred to the virus as the 2019-nCoV. The current shortened name is COVID-19. While COVID-19 is similar in lethality to other illnesses, it can spread in communities for weeks going unnoticed until people start showing symptoms. This makes it hard to identify and contain.

In the United States, the flu can result in as many as 61,000 deaths annually according to the CDC, but unlike COVID-19, the flu is a disease that makes itself known so people can self quarantine before spreading.

Tests conducted by U.S. government scientists reveal that COVID-19 can live in the air for several hours and on some surfaces for up to three days. The virus can live up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 2-3 days on plastic and stainless steel. (source)
