Technology Convergence and Miniaturization

Apple iPhone

Summary. Technology convergence is the phenomenon where devices that had previously been only available individually become available in a single item.

Quite often, there is a reduction in size that goes along with the combining of devices.

For example a printer, copier, scanner, and fax machine when combined can share the same paper tray, paper feed, scanning glass, power supply, and interface screen. This allows the device to take up less room. In addition to the space saved by sharing like components, when technology convergency is combined with miniaturization, even less space is required.

The iPhone (pictured above) is an excellent example of a device that had previously been available as many devices. Now, with over 140,000 programs available for the iPhone, it has an almost unlimited number of functions.
