Summary. There is a fraudulent email circulating that appears to be from Facebook with one of the following subject lines:
- Facebook Account Update
- Facebook Update Tool
- New login system
The email is fake and will take you to a website designed to steal your facebook login and password. Do not click on any of the links in the email.
What To Do. If you’ve already been fooled by the email, quickly go to the official Facebook website, login, and change your password.
How To Identify Fraudulent Emails. Spoof emails are difficult to spot visually because they usually have the same logos, colors, fonts, and formatting as genuine emails and/or the company website they pretend to be from. Some email reading programs (such as Apple Mail) will allow you to hover over a link to see where the link will actually send you. Often, links are misrepresented and will send you to another website. Check links before clicking on them. It’s always best to use an official website login rather than relying on links in emails.
Email Contents. The fraudulent Facebook email that is currently circulating uses the same formatting, fonts, and colors as Facebook and states:
Dear Facebook user,
In an effort to make your online experience safer and more enjoyable, Facebook will be implementing a new login system that will affect all Facebook users. These changes will offer new features and increased account security. Before you are able to use the new login system, you will be required to update your account.
