About Omeleto

[The following is from the about page on the Omeleto website.]

Our Story

We created Omeleto to solve a problem.

We know the struggle of filmmaking. You spend a lot of time and money making your short and just as much trying to get it seen. Festivals are costly — the fees and travel expenses add up. And that’s if you get in — who do you know on the selection committee? It’s often political…

Then after your festival run is over, you put your film online. But as Sundance Programmer Mike Plante explains, “If you put your short online the good news is many people can watch it. But the real news is that 10 people will watch it — even if you are the hottest thing. There is just so much stuff online. Putting something online just isn’t enough.”

There had to be a better way.

When we asked around, we learned a lot of filmmakers were upset about the situation too, so we decided to do something about it.

We had an idea. What if we created our own festival — but online? What if we had the viewing audience judge it instead of festival programmers? What if we created a home for the next generation of great filmmakers — a place that showcases one award-winning film each day?

Moneyball for Movies

At Omeleto, we don’t just take your film and upload it. If accepted, our engineers and data scientists will spend time in A/B testing your film through countless iterations to optimize its online success. We analyze viewer metrics at real-time speeds and compare the engagement signals — such as total watch time, audience retention, like-to-dislike ratio, click-through rate, social media shares, etc. — against a proprietary dataset of successful films we’ve pushed in the past.

We then segment by genre, viewer demographics, geographic location, etc. to glean insights into its commonalities and differences to understand what tweaks to make to its packaging to maximize watch time and engagement levels and get recommended. Think of us as Moneyball for short films in the era of social media.

Of course, we can’t guarantee every film we release will reach millions. But our track record speaks for itself.

We believe in giving filmmakers the reach that no festival or distributor can offer, on a world stage, in a fair and transparent manner. For viewers, we aim to deliver a superior storytelling experience, entirely for free. While we showcase ONLY award-winning films from Oscar-qualifying, BAFTA-qualifying or similar top-tier festivals, the audience has the final say in what films stay on the channel — by voting via likes and dislikes, and audience retention and watch time habits.

So if you’ve made a great film and would like to join a critically-acclaimed community of filmmakers, submit it to us for consideration. If you know of a great filmmaker, please tell them to check us out. Thank you!
