“The Russians” Documentary by Deutsche Welle

The following videos are part of a series called “The Russians” which is a 6-part documentary project produced by Deutsche Welle of Germany. The series is described as follows:

The leading question behind this series is: how do people in the Urals, in Siberia, at the Arctic Circle tick? What do the young strive for, what do the old want? What drives Russians critical of the government, what makes them loyal to the Kremlin? Who are “The Russians”?

We accompany Russians through all phases of life, from birth, childhood and youth to old age and death. They tell us their life story. Full of joy and sorrow, hope and despair, sadness and humour. “The Russians” – a film by Yuri Resheto.

PART 1 – Birth far away from Moscow and the Kremlin

In this volume Lina from Krasnodar is having her baby at home. Ambulance doctor Alexander from Voronezh advises against it. Elena from Tchelyabinsk works as a mother.

PART 2 – Childhood beyond Moscow and the Kremlin

In this volume Viktor from Saint Petersburg has beaten his drug addiction. Veronika from the Tundra has a thing for guns. Vityok from Vologda is a touring star.

PART 3 – Youth beyond Moscow and the Kremlin

In this volume Angel from Moscow prances through nightclubs. Kirill from Saint Petersburg fights without rules. Priest Simeon from Serov preaches under difficult weather conditions.

PART 4 – Adulthood beyond Moscow and the Kremlin

In this volume Boris from the Taiga rescues the grannies. Lyubov of the Volga builds high-rise buildings. Dmitry of Cherepovets casts steel and worships Putin. 

PART 5 – Old age beyond Moscow and the Kremlin

In this volume Viktor from Kirov takes to the runway at 70. Yamilya from Bashkortostan has been adopted at 93. Lyubov from lake Baikal isn’t ready to hang up her skates at nearly 80.

PART 6 – Death far away from Moscow and the Kremlin

In this volume Olga from Samara is a final companion for the terminally ill. Ivan from the Ural Mountains earns his living carving gravestones. Dmitry from Novosibirsk puts a pretty face on death.
