About the Video
“Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard says that no matter how people feel about President Trump, there is an opportunity to end the Korean War and denuclearize North Korea and failure to capitalize could have dire consequences.” ~ From video description on YouTube.
Impactful and Effective
On this and other issues, Gabbard holds to a non-partisan message which is particularly rare in today’s climate of tribalistic, polarizing, and sectarian political views. Rather than praising or criticizing a particular policy, person, or party across the board, she picks issues like diplomacy over war, and promotes those principles — criticizing or praising current and previous administrations regardless of their party affiliation, but instead based on specific issues. This is a political strategy that has been proposed by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Dennis Kucinich — but only demonstrated in a few limited examples. Gabbard operates from this position consistently. It seems to give her an opportunity to talk to people with different views who will be more likely to listen and respect her — making her more effective and impactful than if she were shouting and disagreeing with whatever the ‘other’ person says or does.
So, it is from this background and context that Gabbard seems to be speaking contrary to those in ‘the resistance movement’ who say it’s important to sabotage, obstruct, and resist absolutely everything the opposition is trying to accomplish in order to make them appear ineffective. Gabbard and a few others are saying that one can pick and choose, by selecting to support initiatives that people could agree are universally positive. So, if ‘the opposition’ says, “Let’s stop global thermonuclear war.” Rather than protesting in the streets and sabotaging such efforts, perhaps take a step back and say, “Hmm, maybe that would be okay.”
